SUMMARY:Conservation Quarterly
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second Conservation Quarterly of 2023: Retain the Rain! 💧 \nWith stormwater runoff fees and increased concern about contamination of water supplies and flooding\, it makes sense to seek ways to reduce rainfall runoff from residential lots through the use of native plantings and simple retention projects. This presentation outlines the River Action program “Retain the Rain\,” which includes the most common retention projects to retain the water on your property\, allowing it to soak into the ground instead of flow into storm sewers. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, May 16th from 12-1pm for the second Conservation Quarterly of the year! This presentation will be held in person at the Eastern Avenue Library and livestreamed via Zoom. \nLearn more about the speakers & registration at www.partnersofscottcountywatersheds.org/2023/05/may-2023-conservation-quarterly/

SUMMARY:Walk for River Rights
DESCRIPTION:Join leading BIPOC organizers who have converged in the Quad Cities to begin working towards reclaiming Rights of Nature for the Mississippi River. We will walk across the Centennial Bridge in solidarity as one River community advocating for the Rights of the Mississippi River\, from the headwaters to the Gulf\, and for the rights of all communities whose lives are supported by the waters. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend! A brief introduction and explanation of our convergence will begin at 11:30AM at Schwiebert Park.\n\nThe Walk for River Rights is part of The Mississippi River Summit (May 11th-14th\, 2023\, Quad Cities\, IA-IL)\, a summit centering and advancing the leadership of 40 organizers of historically racially marginalized communities working to protect water\, natural places\, and sacred spaces. The goal is to build an Indigenous-led coalition from the Mississippi Headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico\, and eventually claim the rights of nature for the entire river system and develop an organized frontline group working to protect the Mississippi watershed and all living beings that rely on it as their home.\n\nFor questions contact@greatplainsaction.org

SUMMARY:Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) Marine Litter Project Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has partnered with the Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative to launch a recent project focuses on trash capture in waterways and raising public awareness activities on land-based sources of marine plastic litter and debris in the community. Following the success of the October\, 2021 Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative in the Quad Cities\, the overwhelming community engagement and robust data collection is the perfect lead-in for this CEC project. \nThe project goals are as follows:\n1. Install trash capture devices\n2. Undertake Community Science Activities\n3. Implement Inland Litter Public Awareness Campaign \nThree capture devices have been installed in the pilot city of Davenport in Duck Creek\, Silver Creek\, and Goose Creek. Maintenance and litter data collection is underway. While the capture devices are located in Davenport\, the Quad Cities as a whole are affected by litter that travels through tributaries to the Mississippi River\, ultimately ending up in the Gulf of Mexico and our oceans. Community Science and the awareness campaign will occur throughout the Quad Cites\nregion. \nOn October 15\, 2022 an event will take place at the Freight House Farmers’ Market signaling the kickoff of the community science activities with an overview of the project. \nStay tuned for more details!
